Some students in Wisconsin, Indiana and Nebraska are getting a jump on the Christmas holiday break because of the major snowstorm moving across the Midwest.

The National Weather Service has issued blizzard warnings in parts of several states because of heavy downfalls and winds topping 40 mph. The storm is being blamed for at least three deaths.

Some parts of Wisconsin already have had about 10 inches from overnight. A wide swath from northern Missouri to Wisconsin is likely to see up to a foot as well.

Roads are treacherous, with two highway deaths reported in Wisconsin. There have been many road closures including sections of Interstate 29 in Missouri.

Air travel is also being affected. A jet that landed at Kansas City International had to be towed to a gate because it was not able to turn at the end of a runway. Forecasters say wintry conditions and low clouds could also affect Chicago O'Hare.

The storm could also be a preview. One meteorologist says another storm similar to this one could bring additional snow on Christmas or the day after.
