DONALDSONVILLE - Big changes are coming to Ascension Parish this year.
Parish President Tommy Martinez and 11 Parish Council Members were sworn in this morning to begin new terms serving the people.
Martinez described the widening of roads in the parish as an urgent priority.
"What DOTD has proposed to us is for Ascension Parish to take over 119 miles of state roads," Martinez said.
By taking over the roads the state would pay the parish about $60 million dollars over the next ten years to widen them. That plan is still in the early phases.
Another priority is creating a parish-wide sewer system.
"We have to get started on that, otherwise we won't be able to grow anymore," Martinez said. "DEQ won't issue and more permits to build houses or businesses."
