Big Bend murder leaves residents on edge
BATON ROUGE - Cops are on the lookout for two gunmen in Baton Rouge after a man was shot and killed overnight.
It happened in the 10000 block of Big Bend Avenue, which is in the Park Forest Subdivision. Residents say the area is a quiet and tight-knit community.
"It makes me feel like it could have happened right here. Shots could have came in my house," said resident Willie Kenny.
Investigators said the shooting happened around 10:50 p.m. Wednesday when 20-year-old Jayjaun Martin was gunned down as he tried to turn around in a driveway. Police said a car pulled up and blocked him in, then two men got out and tried to rob Martin and another person, who was able to get away.
Representative Ted James pushed a bill to create a crime district in the subdivision. It was passed in May, and allows them to collect $75 a year from property owners in the neighborhood to fund security improvements.
"It's to help beef up security here. We don't have large issues of crime but when something like this happens it speaks to the need of the importance of the crime prevention district," he said.
If you know anything about the shooting, call the Violent Crimes Unit at 389-4869.
