Bicyclist killed in Jefferson Parish crash
MARRERO - State police are investigating whether alcohol contributed to the death of a 49-year-old bicyclist who was hit by a car in Marrero.
Trooper Melissa Matey says Cleveland Hills of Marrero was hit about 9 p.m. Tuesday while riding without lights across eastbound U.S. Highway 90, between intersections. State law requires bicyclists to ride with traffic and to cross streets only at crosswalks when it would be legal for a pedestrian to do so.
Matey says troopers smelled alcohol, and the coroner's office was taking blood to be tested.
She says 44-year-old Corey McCall of Marrero tried to swerve around Hills but lost control of his car. She says police are investigating whether he was driving over the speed limit.
