Beyonce college course
NEW BRUNSWICK, NEW JERSEY- The study of singer Beyonce is moving off the pages of tabloids and into academia.
Rutgers University is offering a course called "Politicizing Beyonce" through the Department of Women's and Gender Studies.
Kevin Allred is a doctoral student teaching the class and says he's using the singer's career as a way to explore race, gender and sexual politics in America.
He says he's trying to help students think more critically about media consumption.
A class like this is not unheard of. Rutgers also teaches the theology of Bruce Springsteen's song lyrics and Georgetown University has "The Sociology of Hip-Hop: The Urban Theodicy of Jay-Z" Jay-Z is Beyonce's husband.
