BATON ROUGE - Some students are learning some household items could be used to safely view Monday's solar eclipse.

Students at Westdale Middle Schoolers say their lessons have made them excited to see the rare out-of-this-world event, but are also learning that safety is a top priority. So their teacher, Shondra Hines, is helping them by showing them a craft that can help, and students are loving it.

"I like hands-on stuff, I like being able to see and feel what I'm doing instead of hearing it," 8th grader Patirica said.

The craft involves an empty cereal box, tin foil, and tape to create a pinhole camera. That device will allow users to view a reflection of the eclipse, therefore seeing it indirectly, and avoiding much of the risk of damaging their eyes.

The peak time for people in the WBRZ viewing area to watch the eclipse is around 1:26 p.m. Monday. Viewers should never look at the sun directly at any time. Sunglasses are not acceptable to view a solar eclipse and could cause severe damage to the eyes. The DOTD is also warning drivers to pay attention to the road, and to practice all safe driving practices at all times.

Keeping those risks in mind, students are still excited.

"I'm happy to be able to see it dark, because this hasn't happened in over a hundred years and I get to see it," Patricia said.
