BATON ROUGE- State Rep. Michael Jackson of Baton Rouge has returned to the Democratic Party, after becoming an independent three years ago in a failed bid for Congress.

Jackson switched back to the Democrats on May 31, according to records filed with the Louisiana Secretary of State's Office. He had been an independent since 2008, when he lost the congressional
race.

The lawmaker's move back to the Democrats comes before Jackson plans to run for the state Senate in this fall's primary election.

The party switch leaves the 105-member House with three independents and boosts Democratic ranks to 47 members. Republicans hold a majority in the chamber.
