BATON ROUGE - A time capsule sealed in 1939 was opened Monday, 77 years after it was buried at the old Louisiana School for the Deaf.

That building eventually became the Baton Rouge Police headquarters and is now being renovated by the Department of Corrections.

February 22, 1939 was the last time anyone laid eyes on the contents of the copper box hidden behind new walls and underneath renovated floors.

Nathan Harvey had been searching for the box for weeks with just a vague description of what he was looking for.

"They had said it was in the cornerstone and niched in the corner stone," he explains. "That was it."

On Friday, Harvey and Houston Moss, a former school of the deaf student, got lucky.

"My heart was pounding," Moss says. "I was so excited."

The box was cut open. Inside there are dolls, report cards, diplomas, enrollment forms for students who wanted to attend the school, old books, a list of graduates, old coins and some items who's purpose hasn't been determined yet.

Now that the box has been found the items will be studies and restored.

The Department of Corrections plans to load up another time capsule and put it right back where they found this one.
