Folks in Baton Rouge who fly to Charlotte can now skip the drive to the New Orleans Airport.
After seven years without a direct flight to Charlotte, the Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport has added three daily flights to and from the city. This US Airways flight will attract new business and keep existing businesses here, according to Baton Rouge Mayor Kip Holden.
The Shaw Group, whose base is in Baton Rouge with a major facility in Charlotte, considered uprooting and going somewhere else last year, according to Holden. Now that the flight is here, Holden hopes to keep this large employer in his city. He also says flights to cities with international destination selections is the basis for attracting new business to Baton Rouge.
Some wonder if this service will stick around. Anthony Marino, Director of Aviation for the airport, says it will if people buy tickets.
"It all depends on the market. Airlines are here for profitability, and our industry is yield," said Marino, adding the first flight only had two empty seats, and all the flights for the next several days are booked solid.
