Baker DMV changes
BAKER- In the midst of government budgets being slashed left and right, some changes are being made at the Department of Motor Vehicles in Baker.
Express OMV now owns the DMV in Baker, along with two other locations in Baton Rouge and Denham Springs. They promise shorter wait times for DMV operations. For instance, the OMV express office in Baton Rouge sees about 400 customers every day.
However, the quicker service requires higher fees. To renew a license, fees go up by four dollars. Services can legally go up by as much as $18. Some people who use the location say they can just as easily go somewhere else, but most who live nearby agree, the fee is better than the alternative.
"It means a lot to some people who go on lunch breaks," said Ashley Crawford, who lives in Zachary. "If you have to sit and wait all day, I would rather pay a few more dollars than have to wait."
Three dollars of each fee will go back to the city of Baker. The contract states, the city will receive at least $79,000 per year.
