Babysitter accused of raping 10-year-old
BATON ROUGE - Sheriff's deputies arrested an East Baton Rouge man on aggravated rape charges after they said he admitted to sexual conduct with a 10-year-old he was babysitting.
Deputies charged 27-year-old Jerry Wayne Veal with aggravated rape after his arrest Sunday.
Investigators said the 10-year-old victim had been taken to the hospital for serious injury after she said she had hurt herself while riding her bicycle. Doctors called in Children and Family Services workers after they said her injuries weren't consistent with a bike accident.
DCFS workers said the girl eventually told them she had been raped by a man babysitting her and her siblings on Dec. 31. She said she was afraid of the man, who had told her not to tell anyone, and was afraid she would be taken away from her mother if she told someone what had happened.
Detectives brought Veal in for questioning and said he eventually admitted to inappropriately touching the girl, but denied the rape.
Deputies booked him into the parish jail on aggravated rape charges and for an outstanding bench warrant over traffic issues.
