BELLE ROSE - Sheriff's deputies are still searching for answers after finding a missing shooting victim from Assumption Parish.
A fisherman found the body of 23-year-old Tony Rodriguez Jr., in an Iberville Parish canal between Donaldsonville and White Castle.
Rodriguez went missing after a shooting in Assumption Parish ealier this week. Investigators say Rodriguez and his friend were on their way to Donaldsonville when they mistakenly turned down the wrong highway in Belle Rose.
The friend told police they stopped to look at a map for directions, when two black men with guns jumped in front of their vehicle. Rodriguez and his friend were forced out of the car and into a nearby residence, where a fight broke out. During the fight, the friend said Rodriguez was shot in the chest.
"We do not have enough evidence to point the finger at anybody, so we got a lot of work to do to get a probable cause," said Assumption Parish Sheriff Mike Waguespack.
The family of 23-year-old says they're hoping for answers to put an end to this bizarre mystery.
"You killed an innocent person, it's just hard. I just hope he regrets what he did," Rodriguez's cousin told News 2.
Rodriguez's body was sent to New Orleans for an autopsy. Anyone with information about this crime should call the APSO Detectives Division at (985)526-1627 or the Communication Division at (985)369-2912. Callers may remain anonymous.
