PORT ALLEN – The West Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office says a woman is dead following a crash on Highway 1 in Port Allen Tuesday morning.

Authorities have identified the victim as 22-year-old Gina Marks of Plaquemine .

According to Ken Albarez, a traffic supervisor with the sheriff's office, the crash occurred in front of a Walmart after the sheriff's office received reports of two vehicles drag racing around 11 a.m.

Witnesses say the two vehicles were traveling down the roadway when a pickup truck driven by an elderly man attempted to make a turn in their path.

One of the vehicles, a white Dodge pickup truck driven by Marks' brother, reportedly hit the elderly man's vehicle, drove off the highway, and flipped onto the service road.

Albarez says four occupants were inside the vehicle during the crash, one of whom was ejected from the vehicle. One woman, a passenger in the white Dodge, was reportedly killed in the crash.

The second vehicle that was driving alongside the white Dodge was not involved in the wreck but drove through the median and left the scene immediately afterward. Authorities say it was another white pickup truck with a Florida license plate.

Albarez says the sheriff's office cannot properly determine drag racing as the cause of the crash until deputies contact the driver of the other vehicle. Anyone who saw the truck or its plate number is asked to contact WBR Sheriff's office at 343-9234.

The crash remains under investigation.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
