DENHAM SPRINGS - Investigators believe a car break-in, the vehicle and house fire that followed are related.

Thursday night, crews responded to a fire on Hope Circle in Livingston Parish near Lockhart Dr. The house and a car underneath the awning were destroyed.

The house had been foreclosed for a few years. The car belonged to the people living across the street who were using the carport for extra parking.

Hours before the fire, Livingston Parish Sheriff's deputies responded to a break-in at the house. The car's owner told deputies he saw a boy who lived nearby breaking into the car.

Deputies arrested the juvenile who was released back to his parents, per parish policy according to the report.

Nearly three house after the burglary, the house went up in flames. Investigators say the fire started inside the car.

"It looks as if to us that the radio was possibly a target of the break-in to begin with. [Someone] reached in try to yank out the radio, wires then shorted out, which would lead to the car catching on fire which in turn caught the house on fire," Livingston Parish Fire District 5 Assistant Chief Charlie Weaver said.

But there's still the possibility someone deliberately started the fire, according to the Fire Marshall's Office.

Deputy Fire Marshall Brant Thompson says an ignition source was found in the car as well, meaning someone or something they did caused the fire.

The investigation is expected to conclude some time next week.
