AUSTIN, TX - A gunman who tried to set the Mexican Consulate ablaze and fired more than 100 rounds at downtown buildings in Austin has been identified.

Austin police say 49-year-old Larry McQuilliams was responsible for the shootings early Friday.

He died after a confrontation with officers outside police headquarters. Investigators are trying to determine if he was killed by police or took his own life.

Police say McQuilliams fired more than 100 rounds and tried to set the Mexican Consulate building around 2:30 a.m. They say he had a criminal record but didn't elaborate.

Officers received multiple reports of gunfire, though the entire incident lasted about 10 minutes.

No one else was injured or killed in the incident, which took place near the downtown entertainment district
