Audubon Zoo elephant turns 50
NEW ORLEANS - The Audubon Zoo in New Orleans announced plans to celebrate the 50th birthday of one of their Asian elephants this week.
The zoo said staffers will give Panya a cake, gifts, and a giant birthday card signed by guests Thursday afternoon. The celebration will be held in the temporary elephant exhibit, while a large expansion to the elephant enclosure is still under construction.
The zoo's Asian elephants, Panya and 41-year-old Jean, have been in New Orleans for more than 30 years.
The event is scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 16 at the Audubon Zoo.
