The Audubon Nature Institute says a male bottlenose dolphin rescued in June will be released Friday from the Cameron Parish beach where he was found.
It's the first time the Louisiana Marine Mammal and Sea Turtle Rescue Program has been able to release a rehabilitated dolphin, rather than sending it to another aquarium.
This dolphin was rescued June 19 from Rutherford Beach.
He did not have any oil on his body, but his blood was checked for possible oil spill damage as well as other problems.
There wasn't any oil, but he was very underweight, dehydrated, had pneumonia and his brain, lungs and digestive tract were infested with parasites.
He weighed 270 pounds when he arrived.
Now he's healthy and weighs more than 300 pounds.
