The civil sheriff of Orleans Parish is working to improve internal financial controls after a deputy misappropriated $50,000.

An audit said a deputy falsified payroll records for special events.

The sheriff's office discovered the problem last year and the deputy eventually pleaded guilty to misappropriation of public funds.

The audit said nobody had been assigned to independently review and approve the deputies time and attendance reports.

That problem has been fixed, according to the audit.
