A federal audit calls for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to improve nuclear power plant security against infiltration by potential terrorists.

The audit set to be released today recommends additional training in identifying suspected terrorists, greater access to criminal databases by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, stepped up "re-screening" of power plant employees and notifying plant operators of foreign travel.

An outline of the findings was provided to The Associated Press by Sen. Charles Schumer of New York. He said the recommendations must be acted upon within 30 days.

Schumer asked for the audit in March after it was learned a suspected al-Qaida member worked in a New Jersey nuclear power plant for six years.  The suspect is in Yemen now, and had worked as a laborer at several nuclear power plants.

There are two plants in Louisiana, the Waterford station in St. Francisville and the River Bend station in St. Charles Parish.
