Attorney takes on Second Amendment at luncheon

BATON ROUGE - Prominent local attorney Lewis Unglesby had quite a few hypothetical questions for the crowd at the Press Club Monday.

"Who amongst you thinks you need a SWAT rifle? Or wants to hang out with anyone who thinks they need a SWAT rifle?" Unglesby wondered.

He questioned whether assault weapons, like the ones used in the theatre in Aurora, CO, and at Sand Hook Elementary, have a place in society.

"Where do we live that we have to shoot 30 bullets in less than five seconds? What possible value is that to society, who are we protecting?" Unglesby asked.

Unglesby pointed out that background checks for new weapon purchases also have issues.  An individual's mental health or state of mind could change over time.

Troy Viccellio, a gun instructor at Baker Range and an ex-cop, agreed. He compared the situation to getting a driver's license.

"That doesn't mean they're capable to drive every day. Unfortunately, it's the same thing with a firearm," Viccellio said. "It comes down to the person that's actually using the firearm. Is there a way to prevent that? There's no way to prevent drunk driving, either."

Unglesby also pointed out that the Second Amendment is like any other right, in that it is protected until it encroaches on another right.

"Life, liberty, pursuit of happiness. When liberty and pursuit of happiness interferes with life, life wins," Unglesby said. "If we said tomorrow, we are going to ban the sale of all these bullets, immediately, you can't make anymore bullets, period. It wouldn't solve all the problems, but it would start."
