BATON ROUGE - Three days after the East Baton Rouge Mayor's Office abruptly fired the city's police chief, his attorney said the Mayor may not have followed policy when making the decision.

Jill Craft, who represents Dewayne White, told News 2 the State Examiner's officer confirmed with her that the Chief's position is in fact a "Classified Civil Service Employee," which means the firing should go through a lengthy process, including appeals and a hearing with the Civil Service Board.

News 2 tried to speak with the Mayor, but he didn't make himself available for comment or return messages left at his office.

"Men of courage are always willing to stand up and stand behind what it is they do and say, and fools are the ones who stand up and say something and never stand behind it," said Craft, "I think it's critically important, that if you make a decision and you're an elected officials, and you've done it, then you stand behind it."

Craft and White plan to meet with the Mayor to contest the firing at a Feb. 18 hearing.
