Payroll fraud suspect involved in police chase Friday
BATON ROUGE - An employee of a design business located on LSU's South Campus near Gardere cashed stolen payroll checks from the business totaling $15,000 and tried to flee from police when they attempted to arrest him Friday.
Vincent George, 31, was booked into jail in Baton Rouge on forgery and theft charges along with charges related to a pursuit.
Authorities said George left the company earlier this year. Before he resigned, he stole checks from the payroll book and cashed 26 checks he had forged, authorities wrote in arrest documents obtained by WBRZ Saturday.
The checks were cashed at area banks and the manager's signature had been forged.
Authorities suspect George cashed the checks on scheduled payroll days in an attempt to not be detected. According to a report, George was busted when bankers started noticing signatures on the checks did not match and contacted the business.
Friday, authorities said, George went looking for his boss at the business. When police showed up, George sped away. Police followed in pursuit, speeding through Gardere at 65 mph. Authorities said George threw a stolen gun from his car as he attempted to flee.
George crashed into a ditch and was apprehended.
