Atlanta woman sentenced for Katrina fraud

A woman from Atlanta has been sentenced to four months home confinement for mail fraud related to applications for disaster aid that she submitted to the American Red Cross after Hurricane Katrina.

Stacie L. Wheaten was sentenced Wednesday and ordered to repay $13,185 to the Red Cross as well as serve three years supervised release after serving her sentence.

According to court documents, the Red Cross made disaster assistance money of up to $1,565 available to those affected by the 2005 hurricanes.

Wheaten admitted applying for and receiving funds from the agency 17 times.
