Unlike last week's meeting, other cost cutting options did make it on to the agenda.
The district's Commerce Committee combed through different programs this evening to look for savings, but it doesn't mean eliminating teacher and teacher's aid positions are off the table.
Committee member’s mulled over a laundry list of programs and positions to determine if the costs was worth the district's money. School board members sat-in on committee's private votes. Items ranged from programs designed to increase graduation rates to the possibility of furlough dates. The committee voted on whether or not to keep or change anything, which would take a change to legislation to become a reality.
Assumption Parish's schools face a $5 million shortfall over the next school year. In the attempt to save the money to keep teachers in classrooms, some at tonight’s meeting feared student could suffer.
The school board meets tomorrow to go over the information from tonight’s meeting. However, they won’t vote on cuts to programs or positions until the end of this month.
