GONZALES - Emergency officials in Ascension Parish announced evacuation shelters would open tomorrow morning for people in the parish.

Director Rick Webre of the parish Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness said the shelters at Donaldsonville High School and Dutchtown High School will open at 5 a.m. Tuesday.

"If our residents decide to use the shelters, they need to make sure and bring enough supplies to last them a couple of days," Webre said.

People coming to the shelters need to bring necessary items like blankets, water, non-perishable food items, medicines, prescription eyewear, infant formula and diapers. Cots will be available for the elderly and those with physical ailments which prevent mobility.

The parish is under a hurricane warning and a voluntary evacuation order for people living in low-lying areas.
