Ascension scouts out areas for red light cameras

Ascension Parish Sheriff Jeff Wiley is looking for the best place to put red light cameras in the parish.  But that could be affected by a policy change by state transportation leaders.

In June, the Department of Transportation and Development temporarily halted the issuance of new permits to operate red light cameras on state and federal highways. Many of Ascension Parish's most congested intersections are located on those highways.

DOTD leaders said they are trying to come with a policy that includes statewide standards for operating cameras on state and federal highways.  Right now, parishes approve their own rules.

DOTD is also analyzing accident data to see if red light cameras are efficient.  The department plans to have a new policy in place by January.  At that point, it is possible permits could be issued again.

American Traffic Solutions will operate red light cameras in Ascension Parish.  Sheriff Jeff Wiley has not said where the cameras might go up.
