BATON ROUGE- A federal lawsuit first filed in 2008 claims the Ascension Parish School Board discriminated when it redrew district lines to alleviate overcrowding.

The plaintiff in the case, Darrin Kenny Lewis, claims that when Ascension went through a redistricting process the school board forced his children into East Ascension High School. Lewis claims that school has a higher proportion of 'non-white' and economically disadvantaged students than the other two high schools on the east side of the river, Dutchtown and St. Amant High Schools, and so his children would not receive the same opportunities as students at the other two schools.

Lewis filed a list of other complaints, including supposed first amendment violations and claims the move diminished his property value.

Proceedings in the suit begin Tuesday in federal court at 8:30 a.m.
