Ascension school board member retires after 37 years
GONZALES - A member of the Ascension Parish School Board will call it quits after 37 years of service on the board for District 5.
A.J. Nickens, 76, announced his retirement and decision to withdraw from the November elections to the state Thursday.
Nickens described his decision as a difficult one, but one with family in mind saying his relatives "would like for me to do more things that be on the School Board."
Nickens says his next pursuit will be to reform his family band composed of his four kids and wife, Gwendolyn. In the past, the family produced three gospel albums.
His would be opponent on the November ballot, Shawn Sevario, 47, of Prairieville will take on Nicken's position when his term concludes.
