ASCENSION PARISH – Rental properties in Ascension Parish can now receive FEMA assistance for lease and repairs.

FEMA's "Multi-Lease and Repair Program" offers direct temporary housing assistance to eligible applicants who are unable to receive housing assistance due to lack of resources.

"Because there is such a shortage of habitable rental property in the Parish, we decided to participate in this program right away," Matassa said.

Under the program, apartments and condominiums located in a Special Flood Hazard Area may be accepted. Ordinarily, properties in those areas are ineligible, however FEMA has waived that restriction to open up reconstruction money to property owners, according to officials.

Eligible properties are leased to displaced people, allowing use as temporary housing for eligible applicants, for no less than 18 months. The property must have been previously used as multi-family housing to be eligible and may not require repairs and improvement exceeding the value of the lease agreement. Property owners are required to purchase and maintain flood insurance for the full period of the lease agreement.

The amount of flood insurance must be equal to or greater than the project cost, excluding the value of the land or the maximum limit of coverage, whichever is least.
