Ascension Parish prepares for TS Karen
BATON ROUGE - Areas of Ascension Parish prone to flooding are on alert for any rain Tropical Storm Karen may bring.
Officials there have declared a precautionary state of emergency for the parish in advance of the storm. After dealing with some flooding issues in parts of the parish, officials in Ascension are keeping a close eye on Karen and trying to stay ahead of what she might bring.
"We had some issues on the east bank and Sorrento during (Hurricane) Isaac," said Rick Webre, from the Ascension Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness. "But we're not anticipating that level of storm surge."
While not a hurricane, it's still wise to be vigilant and ready for anything. The parish has sandbags ready to go at the Lamar Dixon Expo Center, along with seven other sandbag points.
Residents know all too well not to underestimate any storm.
"Yeah I'm concerned," said Mark Gaudin of Maurepas. "I plan for it to be a foot in the house next time (it floods)."
You can check the Ascension Parish Facebook page for any updates or where to find a sandbag location.
