Ascension Parish fire department repairs coming
PRAIRIEVILLE - The 7th District Fire Station on LA 44 has seen better days. The facade is still crumbling after a tornado tore through the area in December.
Since then, the volunteer fire department has staffed a fire fighter on duty 24 hours a day to secure the property.
The fire department is nearing final approval on the $196,000 price tag for repairs, which should start next month.
"Hopefully by next month we'll have it together, you'll at least start seeing the building come back up, we're gonna have the same look on the building, nothing is going to change, the only thing that's going to change is we're gonna have things anchored more securely," said Asst. Chief Lloyd Solar.
Because of the 24-hour lookout and the lack of doors, the fire fighters think the temporary situation has made them more effective.
"It actually kind of improved our response time, because we don't have to wait for the doors to come up, we're manned 24-7, our response time is quicker because you don't have to come from your house," said Solar.
Fire Chief Ricky Moran told News 2, once the repairs are made, they'll have to re-evaluate the 24 hour post, since insurance is footing the bill for it until the building is fixed.
