GONZALES - After some turbulence this summer, the Ascension Ballooning Festival is officially set to lift off in September.
Organizers said the Louisiana Hot Air Balloon Championship is scheduled to take place Sept. 21 through 23 at the Lamar-Dixon Expo Center in Gonzales.
Ascension Parish officials landed the festival after the Pennington Biomedical Research Center, which hosted it for years, declined to host again because of safety concerns.
Earlier this month organizers said the festival would be held in October, however, that was changed due to conflicts with the Ascension Parish fair, a Boy Scout gathering in the area, and also at the request of a number of balloon pilots who were approached at the recent National Hot Air Balloon Competition in Longview, Texas.
Also, a conflict with an October ballooning event in Albuquerque would have made it difficult for the full support of pilots.
After discussion with Ascension Parish officials and the operations division of the Lamar-Dixon Expo Center, the September dates were deemed the best to fully provide the public with a first class family friendly event.
