A twice convicted drunk driver is now in jail after a deadly hit-and-run in Tangipahoa Parish.

24-year-old Jake Kiefer, Springfield, is accused of crashing into another car two weeks ago on Interstate 55. For an unknown reason, Kiefer’s SUV crossed the median and crashed into a 2008 Ford Focus. The Focus went off the road, overturned and hit parked dump truck. Kiefer fled the scene and continued north on I-55.

The driver of the Foucs, Carl Vorenkamp, and his wife, Carrie Vorenkamp, of Hammond, were killed in the crash.

Kiefer surrendered to Louisiana State Police earlier today. He was booked into the Tangipahoa Parish Jail and charged with reckless operation, hit and run, obstruction of justice, driving under suspension, and two counts of negligent homicide.
