LAFAYETTE - Police arrested a Lafayette man today after they said he vandalized the city's 9/11 memorial.
Police charged Salvador Perez, 35, with criminal damage to an historic building and criminal trespassing.
Police said graffiti and two cardboard cutouts of crashing planes were placed on the monument early Wednesday.
The memorial is a scale replica of the World Trade Center and Pentagon, both of which were damaged in the 9/11 attacks. The monument includes beams from the World Trade Center, limestone from the Pentagon, and soil from the Pennsylvania field where Flight 93 crashed.
Police removed the cutouts and graffiti earlier today.
