Arizona woman has 6 surgeries after bear attack
PHOENIX - A suburban Phoenix woman has undergone six surgeries in seven days after being mauled by a black bear at an eastern Arizona country club.
The husband of 61-year-old Lana Hollingworth of Gilbert says her scalp was ripped off either by the bear's claws or its teeth.
Vern Hollingsworth says most of his wife's injuries were to her upper body.
Lana Hollingsworth was walking her dog the night of June 28 at the Pinetop Country Club when she was attacked.
State wildlife officials think the bear was rummaging through garbage looking for food.
Federal wildlife officials responded and used tracking dogs to find and kill the bear.
Officials used forensic evidence to confirm it was the right bear.
The bear attack was the seventh in Arizona since state officials began tracking bears in 1990.
