APSO: Former deputy dies saving his dog
ASCENSION PARISH - The Ascension Parish sheriff's office says one of it's former deputies was killed trying to save his dog Sunday morning.
Lt. Sam Vitter, 56, drowned in the Spanish Oaks subdivision pond on Swamp Road in Prairieville.
Ascension deputies, the Prairieville fire department and the Gonzales dive team recovered the body Sunday afternoon.
Lt. Vitter served as an Ascension deputy for 32 years and retired in December 2013.
No word yet on funeral arrangements.
