APSO: 75 caught at underage drinking party
SORRENTO - Sheriff's deputies issued summons and arrested a total of 75 people they said were involved with a party in Sorrento where there was underage drinking this weekend.
Deputies said they got a call about the party on Dolly Lane from a parent who said their daughter was at the party and called them to come pick her up. Deputies said they were told there was widespread underage drinking at the gathering.
When they arrived deputies said they saw about 40 vehicles parked outside the home and dozens of beer cans lying around. They said several teens ran for the woods once they arrived, and deputies learned the homeowners were out of town.
Deputies said they found a large amount of alcohol in the garage and inside the house. The teens at the home all ranged from 15 to 18 years of age.
Investigators issued summons to eight 18-year-olds for contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile, as well as to 28 17-year-olds for possession of alcohol by someone younger than 18, and also arrested 39 juveniles on suspicion of underage possession. They said the juveniles were released to the custody of their parents.
The arrests came from an Ascension Parish ordinance that took effect in May 2013. The ordinance prevents minors from having alcohol on a private property unless they're in the presence of a legal guardian, parent, grandparent or "someone over 30 years of age with whom the underage person has established a significant relationship by blood, adoption or infirmity."
