Apartment managers accused of stealing rent money
PRAIRIEVILLE - Deputies arrested a couple, accused of stealing rent money from the apartment complex they managed.
Monica Berzas, 43, and her husband Michael, 44, face felony theft charges. Investigators said the pair collected rent from renters, wrote fake receipts and pocketed the money. Deputies believe the pair took about $12,300.
The couple told the complex owners, renters were not paying on time. But, the scheme fell apart when the owner talked to renters who said they paid on time and showed the receipt as proof.
The Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office has been investigating the impropriety since June 1.
Monica Berzas was arrested earlier this week at a motel and Michael Berzas was arrested at the couple's home, deputies said in a news release Thursday.
