Animal shelter under investigation in north LA
The Franklin Parish District Attorney's Office says a grand jury will consider allegations that Winnsboro's animal shelter kept dogs in illegal conditions.
Prosecutors got a report in July from Louisiana State Police, who were asked to investigate by the sheriff's office because city police run the shelter.
The District Attorney's Office tells The News-Star that the grand jury to be convened Sept. 15 will decide possible charges.
Humane Society of Louisiana Executive Director Jeff Dorson asked Sheriff Steve Pylant in May to investigate the shelter.
Local residents said dogs there were left unattended in March, without food or water. They said dogs reportedly ate another dog's carcass, part of which was found, with four living dogs, in a pen filled with feces.
