Louisiana State Penitentiary Warden Burl Cain says a September manhunt for an escapee cost the state about $500,000. Henry Smith walked off the Angola grounds while working as a trusty. He was captured five days later while hiding under a bridge a few miles from the prison.
Warden Cain says Smith was questioned after he was caught. Investigators say he stored away candy bars to use while on the run. He also said he avoided search teams when he saw the light from cell phones. Cain says phones were not as common during the last escape attempt seven years ago. He says the information will be part of future plans.
Prison officials say the hard work of hundreds of officers from two dozen agencies helped keep Smith pinned down. Cain says the recent deaths of his mother and an inmate friend caused Smith to run.
