BATON ROUGE - The East Baton Rouge Parish School Board will appoint someone to serve as an interim board member until there is an election early next year.

The board made discussed the procedure at its meeting Monday night since Tarvald Smith resigned. Smith was elected to serve as a judge in city court in the October election. Smith had been on the school board for eleven years when he resigned.

People who live in the district Smith represented, District Four, can apply to serve until the election in March. The board will select someone from the pool of applicants. If no one is selected, the governor would have to appoint someone.

"Maybe four or five people are interested in the appointment," board member Vereta Lee said. "But, it would be up to the five board members to look at the credentials of those candidates and select someone that will serve the children well."

Smith could have remained on the board through November, but resigned in order to meet election requirements. Had he not resigned by Thursday, the open position would not have been able to be placed on the March ballot.
