Amite River rising and creating hazards
PRAIRIEVILLE - High amounts of rain over the weekend led to flooded streets in Ascension Parish.
Crews barricaded Idle Hour Road and Kay Street off of Highway 42 Monday. Water from the Amite River has overrun sections of the roads.
Drivers can still travel down the roads but are asked to proceed at their own risk, Ascension Parish spokesperson Lester Kenyon said.
The area is the hardest hit because it is the lowest lying in the parish.
The National Weather Service expects the river to crest at five feet nine inches around 6 p.m. Tuesday.
The flood plane is well above that at eight feet, Kenyon said.
