ALGIERS, Algeria - The fate of many captives held by an al-Qaida offshoot is uncertain in Algeria after military forces attempted a rescue.

At least six people, and perhaps many more, were killed, including Britons and Filipinos.

A U.S. official says some Americans escaped, but others remain either held or unaccounted for. The militants claim 35 hostages and 15 militants were killed.

Britain's Foreign Office says the hostage crisis in Algeria "remains ongoing" but it has given no details of the situation.

Prime Minister David Cameron warns that the nation should be prepared for bad news.
