Alumina powder released from plant
GRAMCERY - Noranda Alumina is offering residents who got alumina dust on their cars a free car wash through Wednesday.
The white powder made in the plant in St. James Parish escaped early Monday and the "dusting" spread over much of Gramercy and Lutcher, according to Sheriff Willy Martin.
In a news release Monday evening, Noranda announced that Soft Touch Express car wash in Lutcher will clean cars through 8 p.m. Monday and from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday.
Alumina powder is not toxic and won't harm people, plants or animals, the company said. It can be removed with soap and water.
Martin said the dust was primarily a nuisance.
Noranda said residents with questions can call 225-869-2270.
