Alexandria priest stripped of his titles
ALEXANDRIA - A Catholic priest has been stripped of his title for allegedly abusing children.
Reverend Frederick James Lyons was ordained in New York in 1952 and served as a priest in Alexandria, Cloutierville and Bunkie before retiring in 1989. Lyons was suspended from priestly functions in 2006, and his case was sent to the Congregation of the Doctrine of Faith for examination. Lyons is now accused of sexually abusing children.
The decision to take away the priest titles was announced Thursday by Alexandria Bishop Ronald Herzog.
The conditions along with his title stripping are: can't celebrate Mass in public, preach, participate in a public liturgy, or wear priestly dress in public.
