BATON ROUGE- LSU's new system president and main campus chancellor, F. King Alexander, has started his job in Baton Rouge.

Alexander attended freshmen orientation events Monday and Tuesday. He sent a letter to students, faculty and staff saying he will visit every LSU campus within the next 60 days and encouraging ideas for university improvements.

Alexander was hired in March by the LSU Board of Supervisors.

He fills a newly-merged position created after the system president was fired and the main campus chancellor resigned.

Alexander had been president of California State University Long Beach since 2006, overseeing a campus with 36,000 students.

The secretive search process generated complaints, with the LSU Faculty Senate questioning Alexander's qualifications and registering a vote of no-confidence in the Board of Supervisors. The search is the subject of multiple lawsuits.
