AL West showdown between Rangers, A's
UNDATED - By the end of the day, there will be a sole leader in the American League West. Oakland and Texas will break their first-place tie when the meet tonight as part of a full 15-game slate in the majors.
The Athletics have won seven of eight, including last night's game against Texas to forge the tie. Oakland goes with 14-game winner Bartolo Colon, while the Rangers offer up Martin Perez, who's won five in a row.
Max Scherzer makes a second bid to become the major league's first 20-game winner when he takes the mound for Detroit against Boston in a battle of division leaders. The 19-1 Scherzer got tagged for six runs in five innings in his last start, but got bailed out when the Tigers rallied for four in the ninth to edge Oakland.
Boston goes with 12-8 Jon Lester.
A pair of American League wildcard hopefuls continues their series in Cleveland tonight. Baltimore goes with 15-game winner Chris Tillman against the Indians, who have 9-9 Ubaldo Jimenez scheduled. The Orioles head are two games back of Tampa Bay for the last wildcard while Cleveland is 3 1-2 back.
Cincinnati hosts St. Louis as both give chase to NL Central leading Pittsburgh. The Cardinals start the day a game back of the Pirates, while Cincinnati is 3 1-2 games behind. The Reds go with 9-10 Homer Bailey, who is 4-0 in his last six starts.
The Pirates are at Milwaukee.
The NL West-leading Dodgers take a five-game winning streak into their game against Colorado. Ricky Nolasco puts his personal six-game winning streak on the line for LA.
