HOUMA - Hurricane Isaac wiped out many adult oysters in Louisiana waters, another blow to an industry that has been struggling in the wake of BP PLC's 2010 massive oil spill. But in a twist, the storm's raging waters also may have helped set the stage for better crops in years to come.

State officials suspect Isaac may have wiped out 20-30 percent of the state's remaining oyster crop.

At the same time, scientists are reporting evidence of one of the best oyster reproductive cycles seen since the BP spill, which may have been triggered by the storm.

That's significant because oysters in some of the state's most productive grounds in Barataria Bay and east of the Mississippi River haven't had a successful reproductive cycle the last two years.
