The state bond commission rejected a request for a Dec. 26th tax election. St. Tammany Parish Fire District 5 asked for the election once district leaders realized a millage was about to expire.
Members of the commission and Secretary of State Jay Dardenne say the oversight does not make it an emergency situation. Dardenne has called for fewer election days statewide in an effort to cut costs.
St. Tammany Parish leaders say the tax money makes up up about 63 percent of the fire district's budget. That money won't be available for at least a year. They say property insurance in the Folsom area will go up while services will go down.
The fire district may call for a March election and borrow money to deal with the problem.
