BATON ROUGE- Lisa Smith is demanding change after she was bitten five times at the dog park on Dalrymple Drive Thursday afternoon.

The attack happened when she was attempting to free her dog from the jaws of an aggressive pit bull mix.

"He turned my dog onto his back and set his mouth into my dog's belly, and I just did everything I could to protect my dog, and I know it wasn't the right thing to do, but I thought he was gonna kill my dog," said Smith, who was bitten on her right hand and arm.

The dogs were eventually separated with the help of four other people, one who was also bitten.

Baton Rouge Police responded to the scene, but deferred action to the Animal Control Officer who arrived to the park. That officer opted to allow the owner of the aggressive dog to keep custody of the dog.

Now Smith wants a clear rule banning the breed from the park.

"Pit bulls should not be allowed in these parks, they shouldn't," said Smith.

Not everyone agrees, though, adding the breed can be good if the owner is responsible.

"They've got enough rules already," said Aaron Vice, who was visiting the park with his dog Stryker. "I think if the owners are watching their dog and they're properly trained then it shouldn't be a problem, more rules are just going to make it harder for other people, I don't think there should be a list of certain dogs that are allowed to come."

The park has a list of more than 20 rules, including one that bans aggressive dogs from the park, but nothing that states a particular breed can't enter the play area.

Smith received treatment at an area hospital for the five bite wounds.

Animal Control Director Hilton Cole told News 2 that owners of pit bulls should be confident their dogs won't attack if they plan on visiting the dog park.
